Montanans for Corporate Accountability (MCA) seeks to strengthen democracy and local economies in Montana and to curb the excessive power of large corporations.
The MCA has a long-term campaign, but with both a long-term and a short-term focus. The long-term focus involves 'starting the conversation' about the appropriate role for and status of corporations in our society, and sharing our perspective regarding the interplay of corporate power, the media, politics, and societal values.
MCA has worked on the recent legislative sessions. In the 2005 session MCA introduced three bills of a generic nature, none of which made it out of committee. In the 2007 session, six bills were introduced on the topics of: Safe and Secure Food Policy Act, Secure and Sustainable Energy Policy Act, Database of Corporate Legal Actions, Confidentiality of Corporate Tax Records, Duties of Corporate Directors, and a Resolution on Corporate Personhood.
Currently MCA’s focus includes advocating for local level initiatives and actions that deal with corporate accountability, highlighting the disparity of wealth, and fostering greater understanding about the role of corporations in pertinent issues facing our world.
MCA consists of interested individuals, organizations and businesses operating at three levels of participation:
Although some of the work is statewide (developing public presentations and media materials, crafting a legislative package), much of the effort is aimed at building grass-roots support by organizing local and regional groups to do public outreach and to carry our issues to officials and candidates.
